Lamb (Agnus Dei)
The Lamb of God — a direct symbol of Christ's sacrifice, drawn from John the Baptist's description of Jesus as "the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world."
A lamb held by the infant John the Baptist, or shown bound on an altar, is one of the most unambiguous symbols in Christian iconography: it identifies Christ's eventual sacrificial death within scenes set decades before the Crucifixion itself.
