The Story
The Finding in the Temple — also called (particularly in art) Christ among the Doctors, the Disputation in the Temple, or variations of those names — is an episode in the early life of Jesus as depicted in the Gospel of Luke (chapter 2). It is the only event of the later childhood of Jesus mentioned in a canonical gospel.
Created in 1654 during the Baroque period, this work belongs firmly within the daily life tradition. Rembrandt van Rijn worked at a moment when the rivalry between Catholic Baroque drama and Protestant restraint reshaped what a painting could mean. Every gesture, fabric, and gleam of light was decoded by contemporary viewers like a private language.
Executed in etching, drypoint and engraving, measuring Overall: 21 x 16.3 cm (8 1/4 x 6 7/16 in.), the surface rewards close looking. Rembrandt van Rijn builds the composition through layered glazes and a tightly controlled palette, letting cool shadows recede so that the warm, lit passages step forward. The brushwork shifts from the precise to the almost dissolved — a hallmark of mature Baroque practice.
