The Story
Woman with a Water Jug (Dutch: Vrouw met waterkan), also known as Young Woman with a Water Pitcher, is a painting finished between 1660–1662 by the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer in the Baroque style. It is oil on canvas, 45.7cm × 40.6 cm, and is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Created in 1667 during the Baroque period, this work belongs firmly within the portrait tradition. Johannes Vermeer worked at a moment when the rivalry between Catholic Baroque drama and Protestant restraint reshaped what a painting could mean. Every gesture, fabric, and gleam of light was decoded by contemporary viewers like a private language.
The physical object — Oil on canvas, 18 x 16 in. (45.7 x 40.6 cm) — carries its own history of handling and restoration. Johannes Vermeer's brushwork here moves between exacting description and looser, more suggestive passages, a balance typical of Baroque studio practice.
Look closely and the painting opens up. Objects you might pass over — a folded letter, a half-drawn curtain, the angle of a glance — were placed to be read. Likeness was only part of the job; the painting also had to argue for the sitter's place in the world.
Today the painting is held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where it remains a touchstone for understanding Johannes Vermeer's contribution to Western art. It has been studied, copied, restored, and argued over for centuries — proof that great paintings keep generating new readings long after their creators have gone.

A restrained palette and sculptural lighting create a solemn geometry. The wooden crate and letter anchor the narrative with journalistic precision.
