The Story
The Triumph of Death is an oil panel painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted c. 1562. It has been in the Museo del Prado in Madrid since 1827. This painting is part of the BBC's 100 Great Paintings.
Created in 1556 during the Renaissance period, this work belongs firmly within the daily life tradition. Pieter Bruegel the Elder worked at a moment when the rivalry between Catholic Baroque drama and Protestant restraint reshaped what a painting could mean. Every gesture, fabric, and gleam of light was decoded by contemporary viewers like a private language.
Executed in Engraving, measuring sheet: 10 5/16 x 13 3/8 in. (26.2 x 33.9 cm), the surface rewards close looking. Pieter Bruegel the Elder builds the composition through layered glazes and a tightly controlled palette, letting cool shadows recede so that the warm, lit passages step forward. The brushwork shifts from the precise to the almost dissolved — a hallmark of mature Baroque practice.
