The Story
Landscape with a Milkmaid, c. 1525. Niccolo Boldrini (Italian, c. 1500–after 1566), after Titian (Italian, c. 1488–1576). Woodcut; image: 37.6 x 53 cm (14 13/16 x 20 7/8 in.); sheet: 37.6 x 53 cm (14 13/16 x 20 7/8 in.). The Cleveland Museum of Art, Mr. and Mrs. Charles G. Prasse Collection, 1969.307
Created in 1525 during the Renaissance period, this work belongs firmly within the landscape tradition. Niccolo Boldrini worked at a moment when the rivalry between Catholic Baroque drama and Protestant restraint reshaped what a painting could mean. Every gesture, fabric, and gleam of light was decoded by contemporary viewers like a private language.
Executed in woodcut, measuring Image: 37.6 x 53 cm (14 13/16 x 20 7/8 in.); Sheet: 37.6 x 53 cm (14 13/16 x 20 7/8 in.), the surface rewards close looking. Niccolo Boldrini builds the composition through layered glazes and a tightly controlled palette, letting cool shadows recede so that the warm, lit passages step forward.
Look closely and the painting opens up. Objects you might pass over — a folded letter, a half-drawn curtain, the angle of a glance — were placed to be read. Weather and light are the real subject — the artist is tracking a specific, fleeting atmospheric moment rather than an idealized, generic view.
Today the painting is held by Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, where it remains a touchstone for understanding Niccolo Boldrini's contribution to Western art. It has been studied, copied, restored, and argued over for centuries — proof that great paintings keep generating new readings long after their creators have gone.
“A silence so complete it becomes its own witness.”

A restrained palette and sculptural lighting create a solemn geometry. The wooden crate and letter anchor the narrative with journalistic precision.
