The Story
Portrait of Maritge Claesdr. Vooght is an oil-on-panel painting by the Dutch Golden Age painter Frans Hals, painted in 1639 and now in a private collection. It is considered a pendant portrait to that of her husband, the Haarlem brewer and mayor Pieter Jacobsz Olycan.
Created in 1639 during the 1600-1650 period, this work belongs firmly within the portrait tradition. Frans Hals worked at a moment when the rivalry between Catholic Baroque drama and Protestant restraint reshaped what a painting could mean. Every gesture, fabric, and gleam of light was decoded by contemporary viewers like a private language.
Executed in inscription and date, upper left: ‘ÆTAT: SVA. 62 / ANº 1639’, measuring width: 115; height: 148; thickness: 7.5; width: 93.2; height: 126.4, the surface rewards close looking. Frans Hals builds the composition through layered glazes and a tightly controlled palette, letting cool shadows recede so that the warm, lit passages step forward. The brushwork shifts from the precise to the almost dissolved — a hallmark of mature Baroque practice.
